An eye opening and truly humbling experience was had on the 21st August, as the Lipault Paris SA team made their way to the Bobbi Bear charity in Amamzintoti, to drop off a donation of handbags, feminine hygiene products, toiletries and baby items for the women and children in need. This was part of our Women’s month initiative where we wanted to give back to causes which helped women and children.
A light in the community
This incredible non-profit is dedicated to helping women and children who have been sexually abused, neglected and abandoned. Their efforts range from fighting the cases of these victims in court, providing a safe and loving temporary home before they can be placed in permanent residences and providing support where victims have been exposed to or have contracted HIV due to their abuse.
A day to remember
Upon arrival, we were met by the amazing lady who runs Bobbi Bear, Eureka Olivier, who showed us around their home, and enlightened us to some of the extraordinary circumstances the women and children they have rescued have come from. We were made aware of the shocking statistics surrounding reported cases of child sexual abuse, having risen 400% in the past 8-9 years. This statistic relates to 1 child being raped every 3 minutes in South Africa alone, emphasizing the undeniably crucial need for organisations like Bobbi Bear.
What is a Bobbi Bear?
The name Bobbi Bear is related to an actual bear which is included in the organisations rape kits. The bear is given to the child with a permanent marker where they are asked to indicate where their abuser assaulted them, and then they are given plasters to put over these ‘wounds’ which help in the healing process of the child. These bears are also used in court, as a lack of good statements and useful evidence due to the traumatic nature of what these children have experienced, cases are thrown out, and sexual predators are allowed to roam free.
How you can help
Our visit to Bobbi Bear truly had a profound effect on the team, and we were overwhelmed by their gratitude and strength despite their unimaginable situations. We urge anyone to make any donations they can of food, clothing, toys, blankets or money for basic running costs. You are able to do so here: bobbibear.org.za/donate/
We can’t wait to help Bobbi Bear again, we have a few things planned for the rest of the year and we commend their efforts to put an end to the truly devastating disregard to those who are most innocent and vulnerable.
